Creating ZIP: duplicates, cancellation and retry

Add ordinary files, continue adding, remove or clear them, then name, create and download a ZIP. Protective limits are 1,000 files and 64 MiB total, not a guarantee for every device.

Duplicate names, including case and Unicode equivalents, reject the new batch while retaining the existing list. Rename on your device and add again. Output uses ZIP Stored for bundling; a smaller size is not guaranteed. Folder import, password protection and split output are unavailable.

Cancel terminates the ZIP worker and keeps the file list for retry. Try fewer files after a creation error; correct the name after a name error. Check names, count and contents after saving. Physical phones and Windows, macOS and 7-Zip opening remain for user confirmation.

Formats and resource limits

ZIP: single-volume Stored / Deflate; ZIP64 and legacy non-Unicode filenames are not supported. Unencrypted RAR and 7Z use the bundled libarchive decoder; not every variant is guaranteed. Encrypted and split archives are outside the scope.

Input is limited to 64 MiB, each expanded file to 64 MiB, expanded total to 128 MiB, and entries to 3,000. Preview is limited to 5 MiB. A low-memory device may fail earlier.

For large files, encrypted archives or split sets, use a compatible desktop extractor. Keep all parts together and follow the sender’s starting-volume instructions. Renaming a part does not convert it into a complete archive.

Cannot open an archive

Compare the exact download size with the sender’s copy and download again if incomplete. Check whether the archive needs a password or other volumes.

Use Start again after an error and reselect the archive. If it repeatedly fails, test the same copy with an appropriate desktop extractor. If that also fails, ask the sender to test or resend the source.

File list opens, but extraction fails

A readable directory does not verify the contents. After an extraction error the list is cleared: use Start again, reselect the archive, and if its directory opens, select just one small file to narrow down the problem.

7-Zip documents archives that display a list but fail during extraction or testing. See the 7-Zip recovery guide. PickUnzip does not repair archives.

A preview limit or unsupported preview type is different from an extraction failure. Download the file if it can be extracted, and open it in a suitable application.

Names, empty folders and duplicate files

UTF-8 filenames are supported. If a legacy ZIP shows an encoding error, ask the sender for a new archive with Unicode filenames. There is no filename-encoding switch. UTF-8 text previews may also show garbled text if the content uses another encoding.

Files with the same basename in different folders remain separate. Exact duplicate paths are rejected. Selected empty directory entries are retained in ZIP output. Check full paths before selecting and after saving.

Downloads and phones

Check the browser download list and any save prompt. Save locations depend on the browser and operating system. Try one small file and open the saved result before exporting a larger selection.

If an in-app browser cannot save, try a standalone browser. If the page stalls, use Cancel & clear and retry once after closing other heavy tabs. Switch to a desktop extractor if it continues to fail. Narrow-screen browser checks do not establish compatibility with every physical phone.

Checked examples in Chromium

Checks used desktop and 390 px mobile Chromium emulation, not physical phones. Stored / Deflate ZIP samples, a 7Z sample, and small RAR4 / RAR5 samples opened and exported selected files. The RAR / 7Z files were compared byte-for-byte with the matching source ZIP. This does not establish compatibility with every method or version.

UTF-8 Chinese paths and filenames, different folders with the same filename, selected empty folders, text and PNG previews, and selective ZIP paths were checked. Corrupt ZIP, encrypted ZIP, unsafe paths, duplicate paths, entry-count and expanded-size limits returned errors and allowed a new archive. Physical-device saving, Safari and Firefox remain unverified.
